Overview
Carboplatin is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of ovarian cancer, but it is also sometimes used off-label to treat other types of cancer, including breast cancer. Off-label use means that although carboplatin is not specifically approved for breast cancer, doctors may prescribe it based on their clinical judgment. Carboplatin is commonly used in cases where the breast cancer is resistant to other treatments or in certain subtypes like triple-negative breast cancer.

Carboplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug. It works by forming cross-links in DNA, which disrupts the DNA structure and prevents cancer cells from dividing and growing. This action leads to cell death, particularly in rapidly growing cancer cells.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that carboplatin is administered through an intravenous (IV) infusion. For breast cancer, it is typically given in cycles, with treatment every three to four weeks depending on an individual’s treatment plan and how well they tolerate the medication. The exact dosing and duration will be determined by your health care provider. Carboplatin should be taken exactly as prescribed by a health care provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Paraplatin include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and diarrhea. Bone marrow suppression, which may result in low blood cell counts, is also common and can lead to fatigue, infections, and bleeding. Other frequent side effects include weakness, hair loss, and peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in the hands and feet).

Rare but serious side effects may include anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions), kidney damage, liver damage, hearing loss, and vision changes. Some individuals may experience life-threatening bone marrow suppression, which can lead to severe infections or bleeding.
