Can You Get Lymphodema In Places Other Than Your Arm?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just read the recent thread on lymphodema in the arm - the swelling the sharp pain, etc. My mastectomy site has always had fluid on it and it's not been an issue really. Recently, just below the mastecomy the area has been tender and had sharp pains at times. It mostly doesn't bother me, but I can feel 'twinges of not quite right' when I twist or bend. I plan on seeing the doctor about it soon, but I'm just wondering if this could possibly be lymphodema - a location other than the arm… read more

Hopefully this is just as you described, possibly muscle strain from lifting. Depending on how long ago your surgery was you could still be developing scar tissue. Typically lymphedema causes a tight, swollen feeling and sometimes a sense that your arm is very heavy. Your rings will tighten or watch won't fit. Lymphedema following mastectomy and/or node biopsy can occur even many years after being symptom free. If this feeling persists I would talk to your doctor about it. Lymphedema can't be prevented but can be managed with various means, so be sure and talk with your physician.

Yep!you can get it where ever there's lymph nodes that have been compromised.when I first been diagnosed last Feb.,that was one of the first things I found out.and just watching some of the other patients with how severe it can get is so heartbreaking.i have it in my right arm on account of me having 40 lymph nodes removed.but some patients have it in their legs and they don't even have cancer.just a surgery can do it.i did PT for 8 months, during that time, had to be wrapped twice a week,do lymphatic massage and make sure when i shower, that the water wasn't too hot for it would make you swell more which your trying to avoid at all costs.i'm now wearing a sleeve and gauntlet,do exercises for it at home and gym and try to stay out of sun as much as i can.i wish you luck and hopefully you can see some good PT's.

Lymphedema can happen any place in the body. My cousin had it in one leg, not due to cancer treatment. It just happens when the lymph nodes, a very low pressure system, decides not to pump the lymph fluid along as quickly as it reaches the node. So you get a drainage backup, much like a slow drain when the tap flows faster than the water drains out.

I have it in my stomach. It makes the whole stomach area look off. Like it is swollen on one side.
