Sentinal Node Biopsy On Non Cancerous Side
I plan to have a bilateral mastectomy even though my cancer is only in the right breast. They will do a sentinal node biopsy on right side, of course, but what about the left? For those that had a bilateral mastecomy, did you have sentinal node testing on non cancerous breast? One surgeon said they would do both breasts and another said they wouldn't do the noncancerous breast because, well, there is no evidence of cancer. Thank you.
Only tested the cancer side nodes.
But the docs will send the 'healthy breast' tissue for a pathology report. If there is no indication of cancer in the tissue on that side, there really is no need to do a node biopsy on that side. Hope that helps and good luck!
I only had a sentinel node disection on my leftside where my cancer was located. The doctors told me it was not necessary to have one on the well side. I did opt after my mastectomy on my leftside I went back 4 months later and had my other side removed. I chose not to do reconstruction. I don't regret my decision.
Lymph edema is a lifelong risk even if only sentinel node biopsy is done so normally it's not indicated on non-Cancer side.
My surgeon did an auxiliary node dissection on my right cancer side & nothing on left non cancer side. I had agressive cancer, but had PET scan which did not indicate any cancer in lymph nodes on non cancer side
My surgeon only tested the cancerous side.
Has Anyone Had A Positive Sentinel Lymph Node But Opted Not To Have The Axillary Nodes Taken?
Does Mastectomy Always Require Lymph Node Removal (if Nodes Are Clear.) Does Lymphadema Occur If Nodes Remain? Thanks All!
What’s The Difference Between Lymph Node Dissection And Lymph Node Biopsy?
