Chemo Brain
Is anyone else struggling with this issue? I completed treatment in 2010 and it still continues to be an issue. I can't tell if it's the chemo, the tamoxifen I currently take, or the ongoing stress in my life. I recently returned to full time work and am really struggling with the multitasking necessary for my job. I constantly forget or misplace things. I often "blank out " or get lost in my thoughts. I recently had a car accident due to my inability to stay focused, totaling my car and someone⦠read more
U r not losing ur mind! I gave been going through this now for 21/2 years! I've been to speech therapy for mind and brain exercises , no help! It's just the nature of the beast it's very frustrating! Give urself a break ok? I am a hairstylist and I can NOT work more than 6 hours! The fatigue gets so bad it's scary! I just went off of Arimidex because I really did think I was going crazy! I almost went to the a ER a couple of times because I was so out of it! I now gave narcolepsy because of the damn pill! I took it for a year and I've been off of it for 5 weeks and won't take anything else because the other choices aren't much better. My sleep disorder dr has helped me more than other drs. When ur cancer is gone ur oncologist only sees u for check ups and ur hormone therapy pill. My sleep dr recommended Ritalin, started at 5mg, then 10, then 15, nothing! Now I'm on Adderall starting out with 10mg 2x a day. So for it's helping a little but I'm going to have to up the dosage. This is what Arimidex has done toMe!! Along with other horrible side effects! This can cause long term side effects as well! So for me quality of life is a big deal right now! U have to b ur own advocate! I always say drs can treat and diagnose but they have Jo clue what it's like to have cancer!! Take it easy on urself and it is what it is! Take one day at a time and God is a good listener! Blessings to u!!
*hug* Chemo, Tamoxifen or stress... well, it could be all three. Just know it's real.
I've found I do much better when I make lists now.
I have the same problems. I cant even carry on a conversation sometimes. I cant remember the simplest words sometimes. I think its the tamoxifen cause it started when I was taking it the first dx. It did get worse with chemo...still have it though and im back on tamoxifen
Ritalin is used for A.D.D patients, but people who do not have A.D.D. get the opposite effect.
Hi, Doll. It most likely is the tamoxifen, but many people who have gone through chemo have complained about the same thing you are. You are not alone. I too, could not remember a thing and found myself missing exits, walking into a room and cant remember why, forgotten appointments, forgot where you parked, I have even forgotten where my oncologists office was. The only thing that really helped are two things. 1st - I keep a daily planner and write everything I do in it ( even when to take my meds)This lets your mind relax and you can stop running everything over and over in your head. It's on the list, so you cant forget. The 2nd thing to do is ask your oncologist about Ritalin. Yes, the college drug to let students stay up all night and cram for a test. However, in lower doses, it helps you concentrate and stay focused and gives you energy. That is what I am now taking, and I feel much better. Hope it helps ~ Tamara
