@A MyBCTeam Member, I had an expander put in on my mastectomy side but wasn't healing well so I had it taken out and had the DIEP flap done instead. I also have had lipo and fat transfers done a few months later. I like that I don't have implants.

A microsurgeon, which is our case is a plastic surgeon, who has specific training in working with blood vessels. For the DIEP flap, which is what I had done, only a microsurgeon would have training in this procedure. There were 3 microsurgeons in the Operating room for my surgery and they disconnected the blood vessels in my abdominal area and reconnected them to my breast with the use or a microscope. A regular plastic surgeon would not know how to do this procedure. My surgery was almost 10 hours long but I am happy with my results and do not have implants. A microsurgeon would know how to use expanders, DIEP flap, tram flap and latisimus dorsi flap and whatever other flap options that are available. If you to to a regular plastic surgeon that doesn't have training in microsurgery, then they would only be able to do the expanders, back flap or tram. So my opinion would be to go to a microsurgeon that does breast reconstruction and have him review your options with you. My first regular plastic surgeon only told me I had one option which was to do the back flap and even though I told him I didn't want to he said there weren't any other options but I'm glad I didn't listen to him and found a microsurgeon to do the DIEP.
