Has Anyone Stopped Arimidex B/c Of SE And Then Had Surgery?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mapleton, UT

I was dx Dec'13, lumpectomy, radiation & 6 mo of Arimidex. Terrible SE exacerbating other health issues (some severe). Stopped taking it. Been off it four months. I'm considering my treatment options eg. tamox, other Rx? having a double mast?, or nothing? I have DCIS, Stage 1 grade 2 tumor ER+ PR+ HR-.a lower onco, clean margins, no nodes, BRCA clear, Your thoughts and experiences please.

I agree with Barbara65. I did 30 radiation treatments, my Onco dx score was a 7. I have enough problems without adding all the side effects from an AI. I did my research, AI’s may lower you reoccurrence of cancer, but they don’t necessarily increase your longevity. I’m opting for quality of life.

It was June 26, 2023, I found out I had breast cancer, stage 1 grade 2-3 DCIS.. by August 9th. I had a double mastectomy chose no reconstruction and two lymph nodes removed. BRCA clear and clean margins, oncotype was low. No radiation or chemo, declined the Antiestrogen. I have lost a father and brother to cancer and my older brother has been in remission 7 years. I saw what chemo and radiation did to them, I am almost 68 years old and felt the Side affects of the meds. I was not willing to deal with, I have read so much and sometimes it’s only up to you. my husband of 44 years totally agreed with me. We walk almost every day, I am at a good weight, eat very healthy. When I first got cancer, I was trusting in God no matter which way this was going to go I would trust in him. “My Faith is Bigger than My Fear” I am 6 week post surgery and doing great.

Arimedex gave me instant arthritis. tried all the the other inhibitors and then Tamoxifen. Have been on [[treatment:Tamoxifen:540f562a[[phone:8608758280000445]] 4:]] years. I did get a blood clot and went of it for a year so I have to take it another year. There is less side effects with tamoxifen than with arimedex.

I didn't take anything before lumpectomy and only took Anastrozole around 15 different days since surgery ( July 3) I took it off and on for 2 weeks and couldn't take the extreme fatigue. I don't want to live my life in bed . So went off it for 2 weeks and tried it again for 7 days in a row and for 5 of those 7 days I was needing to lay down every few hours and knee joints started to ache so I stopped taking it again and this time I am done. You could try the other AI's to see if they are more tolerable. I am not though. I hope you are healing well from surgery. 🥰

I read all these replies about the AI's and it just makes me still not to want to even start taking them. I just refuse to live with the side effects that everyone above has talked about.
