My daughter, holly went through 20 weeks of chemo. She recently had a double mastectomy with expanders put in. Or having the basic implant procedure done for the reconstruction? And how long have you waited after radiation to have… read more

I was told that because of radiation, implants were not a good option. That there was a good chance of a hard pocket forming around the implant. Also that breast implants would always leave my chest feeling hard and cold...where as the flap reconstruction gives you warm natural feeling breasts because it's your own tissue.

I am 42 and did the tissue exp with implants. I have enough scars and trauma to my body and could not or would not even entertain the Tram or DIEP or any options cutting another part of my body. Plus I did not have enough fat/skin although I beg to differ with my PS. I am happy with what I chose. The expanders are tough for a few months but it was worth it. Your daughter is still young and I am sure want to be able to dress without using a prothetic. The TE's are also the "easiest" to heal from.

Also check out info on DIEP flaps. It doesn't use any muscles.
