A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

My sister's coworker had stage 4 bc. Her mom, grandmother and either an aunt or sister as well have had bc. Her BRCA result was negative. I don't understand. Was it just her luck?

My BRCA came out negative but come to find that I have a different gene mutation that causes breast cancer. The ATM mutation was passed down from my Grandmother on my Father's side.

My insurance denied me at first, then accepted it. I had a gut feeling that my family carried a mutated gene. My Grandmother had breast cancer and ovarian cancer and my father had bladder cancer twice. i could not find any other information about my Grandmother's family because she and her twin brother were place in an orphanage. They finally accepted to administer the test due to my family history of cancer. The Moffett Center will now give my children, my brother and grandchildren the test for $200. They have a 50% chance of inheriting the mutation that was passed down to me. My insurance paid 4 grand for my testing. You do not need to be a certain age to get this blood work but you must show a history of cancer in order for my oncologist to think testing was necessary. Good luck!

MYRIAD myRisk hereditary cancer results analized various genes that can contribute to cancer. Here are the genes they analized (APC, ATM,BARD1, BMPR1A, BRCA1, BRCA2, BRIP1, CDH1, CDK4, CDKN2A, CHEK2, EPCAM, (large arrangements onkly) MLH!, MSH2, MSH6, MUTYH, NBN, PALB2, PMS2, PTEN, RAD51C, RAD51D, SMAD4, STK11, TP53. I came up positive with the ATM mmutation that showed high risk of breast cancer and moderate for pancreatic cancer and other cancers from this mutation. I asked my Father to be tested and he also has the ATM mutation as well as an APC mutation. I hope this info helps!

I was 51 when I was tested. The squeaky wheel gets the oil! I would be persistent with my oncologist. Which of your family members had cancer?
