Filling Tissue Expanders While Still Have Port

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

In October, I am scheduled to reattempt tissue expanders (lost original received during bi-lat mast due to infection). I have a Power Port now (half way through Taxol, but won't be done with Herceptin until next Summer). What I am wondering about is as fluid is added to the tissue expanders will there be added discomfort on the side where the port is? I keep thinking adding the TE's and then increasing their size will stretch skin near port.

I don't have a port but I did have just have my first tissue expansion and I have to say I did not feel a thing. No discomfort whatsoever. I didn't feel the needle going in and afterwards, no pain. Now - I am rather small to begin with so maybe that has something to do with it. I think I only need two "fillings". I have heard from others that it can be painful but that was not my experience. I hope you have the same.

I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I immediately started getting fills every week. I was a DD, and I maxed out my expanders with the port in. I had the expanders removes and I got implant silicone installed. It's been a year since I had my expanders removed and silicone implants put in. I am cancer free right now, but my oncologist says because I had Triple Negative breast cancer, it may come back, so I have to keep my port in for two years. it does not bother me, so I am thinking to keep it in another year just to make sure Canced does not come back. I heard a lot of nightmare stories on infected ports

My experience was very painful. I had D cup size breast and had a bilateral mastectomy and a radical on my right breast so there was no flap to work with. My plastic surgeon said he could get my breast back to the same size. He lied by the third or fourth visit the right side busted and deflated. I didn't continue it was such a awful experience I couldn't do it again. So now I have a implant on the left side a prosthesis on the right side and also a small prosthesis on the left so they are the same size.
