Anyone On Arimidex With Bone Mets?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Goose Creek, SC

After two years on Tamoxifen they found cancer in my bones. The oncologist wants to put me on Arimidex now. Somehow it just doesn't make sense to me to take a medicine with side effect affecting bone density if I have bone mets. Any advice on that?

Sorry for the delay in responding, have not been on this site much over the past few weeks!! RoseannDT, my bone mets disappeared 1 year ago. I am thankful for xgeva, think it is saving my life

Your onco will probably put you on Xgeva which strengthens your bones and helps to stabilize the cancer cells in your bones. Xgeva is an injection that I have once a month and have been on it for 18 months now. It has no noticeable side effects. hugs to you, Marty

Yes that's true but the estrogen blockers work on the cancer but can cause osteoporosis which the Xgeva prevents.

I had bone mets to my femur and after chemo and radiation I am now on Arimidex. My cancer is Estrogen positive so the meds help block my estrogen which should help slow down the spread of my cancer. I had a bone density test done before i started so they would have a baseline to go on. Every so often i will have another one done. I guess there is a shot we can have if it gets too low. Hope this helps!

we knew that mine had spread to my femur before my surgery but I still had a lumpectomy and chemo and radiation. The surgeon told me that years ago they probably wouldn't have done surgery but women are living longer and longer even with stage 4, and who knows maybe they will come up with a cure before I die!
