Experiences With Hair Falling Out
Personal question, hoping for honest experience..... I'm starting chemo on Tuesday and I know that my hair is going to fall out. WHEN do you recommend shaving your head? I don't want to wait to long as I'm hoping to have a halo wig made from my own hair. And I don't want the shock of it falling out. But I don't want to have to shave multiple times.
Also, so how does the hair on your arms, legs, pubic area come out????? Did you just wake up one day to a bed full of hair? I'm trying to⦠read more
I starting losing my hair two weeks to the day I had my first chemo with docetaxel, herceptin and perjeta. It came out in clumps in my hand and was very upsetting. I went a couple days later to my wig shop and she cut it off to a very short pixie. It was uncomfortable under the wig so the next week I had my daughter just give me a buzz cut (GI Jane ish). At that point I never lost anymore hair - never did go completely bald. You are better off cutting it off on your own schedule and not waiting for it to start falling out.
The other hair just gradually came out - didn't realize notice it. Loved not having to shave my underarms or legs that whole time. Didn't think I was going to lose my eyebrows or lashes but they thinned out to nothing toward the end of the chemo treatments.
Check out the program - Look Good Feel Better (if you haven't already). It's a great program - they teach you how to apply make-up and you get a lot of freebies (and I got a lot of nice freebies). Also I've mentioned this before, I got a lot of my scarves at myheadcoverings.com. They are very reasonable and you don't have to figure out how to tie them (which I am not good at). Hope this helps.
I went to Ireland 2 months after I finished treatment. I wore my scarves the whole time and felt great!
I never shaved mine. I had it cut short a week after first chemo and wore a wig that resembled my original hairstyle from then on. It never all fell out, but a fringe remained around my face. My eyebrows and eyelashes came out sometime after the 2nd chemo. The thing no one told me was that when it falls out it hurts! It feels like goose bumps on your head. My eyelashes hurt too and I wanted so bad to rub my eyes. I don't know when my arm and leg hair came out. I just noticed one day it was not there. I had been coloring my hair, but when it came back in, I liked the grey so I got a grey wig and wore that until the hair all came back. It took it a year to get as full and thick as my original hair. Good luck to you. Take this time to pamper yourself with wigs, scarves, and cosmetics. It will really make you feel better.
My oncologist told me day 21 is usually when hair loss starts. That was pretty much on the money. She neglected to mention my eyebrows & eyelashes would all fall completely out after I'd finished chemo; turns out the new ones coming in pushed the old ones out.
I did not have to have chemo. I am taking Letrozole and went through 25 rounds of radiation. 13 with a bolus (wet towel over chest) 12 without. I am/have been loosing my hair. I have head hair (thinning), very little pubic hair, 99% of body hair gone BUT I do still have facial hair. I laugh and feel this should be in the song ironic. Keep laughing.
