Estrogen Testing

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brawley, CA

My bc was ER/PR. Should my onco be checking estrogen levels when she requests my blood work? She doesn't and I'm curious. I will mention to her.

As I understand, your er status alone determines whether hormone blocking therapy should be applied or not. Tracking E levels wouldn't preclude usage unless it registered 0, and that's hardly possible when adrenals and fat produce modest amounts of estrogen, even when your ovaries are not functioning.
Therefore, testing becomes important when trying to determine if those ovaries have shut down and which blocker to use based on that status.
If it's not clear--that you've taken measures to eradicate our er positve cancer through various treatments, such as surgery, radiation or chemo is as sure as we can get that we're cancer free. Estrogen, theoretically, is not a problem, because it's simply not unless there's rogue cancer cell that likes to lock up with it and grow. And they have tx just for that.

ya'll r getting it wrong. they cant tell from your blood work that you stopped taking the pills. the blood work will tell them things like if the pills are causing harm to your kidneys, liver, etc. it can tell them if you have an infection. if you stop taking the pills that is your choice but you should tell them.

Mine doesn't either and I asked about that but was pretty much told it doesn't work that way. I asked one of the oncology nurses and really didn't understand the explanation. If you can get a good explanation, let the rest of us know. A good number of women on here are nurses so it will be good to hear what they say - they might understand it better. <3

if u are taking tamoxifen or arimedex this will stop your estrogen and progesterone eventually. no need to check levels because that is all they will do for you . might consider having ovaries removed with or without uterus removed
