Tamoxifen Side Effects

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Tracy, CA

I’ve been on tamoxifen for 2 years now. The first year or so I had minimal side effects. Then during the 2nd year started having joint pain so my oncologist had me take 1/2 pill in the am and 1/2 at night. After a couple of months I started having extremely bad anxiety and insomnia. I’m thinking that taking that 1/2 pill at night is causing at least the insomnia. I didn’t think that I could get side effects over a year later.......anyone else experience this?

@A MyBCTeam Member did you ever have them check to see if you have the right levels of the enzyme to metabolize tamoxifen? Those that don’t would start to experience worse and worse symptoms as the drug builds up in your system. Get checked (CYP2D6). There are also foods and other drugs that compete with tamoxifen for the enzyme. Studies now show taking 10mg has just as much protective value as 20 so maybe even a lower dose is something to think about.

@A MyBCTeam Member glad to see I'm not the only that quit cold turkey. It amazes me because my oncologist looked at me like I was a one off. When I asked why there weren't alternatives to tamoxifen like there were for AI's I gotword for word "because no one has issues with tamoxifen". I almost punched her in the face.

@A MyBCTeam Member agreed. I was so pissed when I read the REAL stats and what they actually mean. Such a small benefit. And the research is contradictory about staying on for ten years for survival benefits. Some research found, extended use of @ tamoxifen shows that it becomes less effective because we/cancer becomes immune to it. So which is it docs? So screw it I'd rather roll the dice and live in the mean time. Now they are saying only 10mg is needed and not 20. They don’t know what the hell they are doing!

@A MyBCTeam Member yes! And not only is it less effective as time goes on, it actually starts acting like estrogen in your body and can actually cause cancer! Not to mention the side effects get worse the longer you are on it!!
