I stayed overnight and went home the next morning. I had the help of my husband and kids.

Bmx stayed 2 nights in the hospital and had a nurse come to my house a few times as well. I think I could have had 9 home visits with my insurance but that seems excessive. Once I got the hang of it I told her she didn’t need to come anymore. She came 3 times to my house in 2 weeks time.

Double mastectomy in 2014. Scheduled to stay overnight but because I would have no one at home with me the next night I stayed a second night.

No that’s not the strategy about catching something I’m sad to say it’s money and women are always getting the short stick. I have heard of this and have a friend that went home same day. But that’s horrible. You need to talk to your plastic surgeon he/she desides when they will discharge you. My surgeon was an angel and left it up to me on how I felt. I pushed myself to go home Wednesday afternoon because I would have smothered “my roommate” in her sleep had I not. But I could have stayed another day or two. My surgery was Monday 7am and I left Wednesday 6pm. The ride home was horrible as I was still pretty nauseaous. I have a bad reaction to anesthesia and surgeries on the chest and neck cause even more nausea for some reason.

Really push for what you feel comfortable with insurance companies are making their decision based on profit and so is the hospital. They don’t have your best interest in mind! After my exchange surgery I went home same day. But mastectomy or bilateral matectony is just a pretty word for amputation. They are removing a body part. Any other body part you would not be pushed out same day unless it was a finger or maybe a toe. The medical community in this country makes me furious.

I just had my mastecomy done this past Mon Aug 27 at MSK in NYC. It was performed at the Josie Roberts surgical center, so they only have the license to keep patients over night. I've never heard of being sent home the same day of surgery.

However, you don't want to spend too much time in the hospital, in risk of infection, it's always better to be up and around in your own home environment. You know, keep the healthy blood flowing!
