4 Years Post Recon Loss Of Mobility And Strength
I had a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction in 2014. No chemo, no radiation and no meds with a diagnosis of DCIS. Everything went as planned but for the last two years, I've been on a physical downward spiral. Reconstruction is silicone implants under the muscle. I have lost a tremendous amount of strength, as there are many movements I can no longer do because the chest muscles pull tight across the implants causing them to feel displaced. In addition, I am in pain for days at a time and… read more
@A MyBCTeam Member: im SO glad you found someone to help! I had my implants moved over my pecs and its so much better!! 💚
Sorry I didn't update sooner! I visited the new PS and am happy to report that she is working to help women just like us. I am having revised reconstruction soon! After talking to her, I understand there is a vast spectrum of plastic surgeons with varying degrees of knowledge in each field. My original PS did a great job four years ago with what was considered best practice at the time. That best practice was to place the implants under the muscle. My original reconstruction looks great and I have no "illness" from the implants, just pain because of where the muscle is and scar tissue that has formed around it. Over the last four years my original PS joined forces with a group of what I call "vanity" plastic surgeons. She has shifted her focus to aesthetics and away from BC recon. Because of this, I feel she has not learned about side affects and new best practices. When I visited with her, she was unable to give me a reasonable solution; nor did she admit that she didn't know what to do. After listening to all of my physical symptoms and hearing that I feel it is all related to this muscles, tendons and scar tissue, she repeatedly reassured me that I wasn't crazy! She was clearly well versed on the post-recon findings and newest procedures to fix the problem. Because of my body and where I'm at today, she will be doing a complete removal of the existing implants and all tissue surrounding them. The muscle will be placed back on the chest wall and she will use ADM to create a completely new capsule and new smaller implants will be placed. If I can give one piece of advice here that would've been helpful to me, it's read the credentials and practices of different plastic surgeons. I noticed that my previous PS and new PS have very different practices. I already explained the previous; but the new PS cases look much different. The new PS uses all of the updated techniques; mostly using other parts of the body to reconstruct for the most natural look and materials. She is doing a lot of revised reconstructions. I know this update is a little fragmented; I'm super busy at work wrapping up 2018! If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me and I'd be glad to share or give further details.
I had my implants the 2nd time OVER the muscle and it has made all the difference. It was so much better-less pain and a way easier recovery! Ask your PS if you would be a candidate for above the muscle. You need to have extra skin on top--I like mine--they are not perfect due to a few ripples-but they look nice
I had breast implant illness. Sometimes your body reacts to the chemicals in the implants causing all sorts of health problems. I had joint pain, muscle weakness, memory issues and a lot more symptoms. Within a month of removing my implants I got my energy back. At 7 weeks after my surgery I was climbing mountains. I actually overdid it while scaling rocks to get to the top and now have some back issues. I can't wait to heal to get back to hiking more mountains. There is a FB group called Breast implant illness and healing.

@A MyBCTeam Member, its been almost three years for me with mastectomy and implant reconstruction. I never got use to the implants. I am in pain and discomfort 80% of the time. Now I have a new reoccurrence of BC and am currently doing chemo again with surgery to follow and implants will have to go and I will not be replacing them. Going flat. It is just not worth for me to go through the pain of reconstruction again. Praying you find what will be the best thing for you to do. I know its not easy and its unfortunate to go through constant pain and discomfort. At some point something needs to be done to give you quality of life. Prayers your way.
