Has Anyone Else Had Problems With Swelling And/ Or Indentations From Your Bra After Radiation?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had a lumpectomy and radiation which ended in November. My skin under the breast was very irritated by the end of the radiation and I lost the top layer of skin but it healed pretty quickly. At the end of December I noticed that by the end of the day after wearing a bra that I now know was too small I would get a line of swelling where my two breasts had rubbed against each other. The swelling would go away soon after removing the bra. There is no swelling on those days when I am home and… read more

I had a partial mastectomy followed by radiation. I find bras to still be uncomfortable. I usually just wear a camisole. Fortunately, I’m very small-breasted. Just another thing in the “new normal.”

I finished radiation in April of 2017. I have all sorts of mastectomy bras but after a few hours they hurt so much. Even some camisoles that have that elastic shelf bra tend to irritate that area that was radiated. During radiation they used a BOLUS every other day. They placed a warm wet towel on my breast and radiated through it. I didn’t think of anything at the time but now almost 2 years later that area under my breast where there was less tissue is still damaged. I do better with loose fitting sports bras or bralettes

Thanks for the reply, I have found the same thing. I end up rotating bras and camisoles sometimes wearing 3 different ones in one day. I wear a sports bra with a regular band but sometimes it irritates under the breast or on the side, then I switch to an all fabric bra. I have lymphadema in the breast so have to wear a sports bra or a compression bra. The latest compression one I have is a Belisse bra which is long and doesn't irritate under the breast but unfortunately has seams that show under a lot of clothes. Going back to a lymphadema specialist to try to get rid of it again.

I have found that I can't wear fancy bras just plain smooth material or my breast becomes irritated/sore especially underneath so I prefer sports bra or similar

Thanks for the replies! My surgeon also suggested a camisole and I will give it a try.
