What Is A Reasonable Time After Active Treatment For Breast Pain To End?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Muskogee, OK

I finished active treatment Aug. 8 after surgery, chemo, and 28 rads. In the last two weeks my left breast has been painful every which way. You name it. Soreness, piercing pains, stabbing pain, general aching, bruise-like sensations, tingling, numbness, and more. It is a nuisance, but bearable. I’m just concerned it is too much. I’ve had some of these which were very infrequent in the first few months, but this is almost constant.

@A MyBCTeam Member I get a lot of weird pains and feelings but I got a mastectomy. It’s supposed to be the nerves trying to grow back with nowhere to go. August 20 was a year since my surgery and my cancer side was hurting just a couple of days ago. My friend gets pain and it’s been 5 years. She calls them phantom pains I guess because the area is numb but she still feels pain

MiDi you are the first one that I've seen to mention the phantom itching that you can't scratch. I have that too! I'm almost 3 years out and still numb under my arm but have the itching that I can't scratch. It's almost worse than the pain.

Let us not forget we had major surgery! We will have pain and it will subside (not necessarily go away...) as time goes on. The pain varies. I had a mastectomy on the right side exactly 1 year ago. I get pain some days, my bras cut into the area on my armpit where the lymph nodes were removed. Other times I get itiching that I can't scratch; I don't know where its coming from. My breast has some sensations but not lots. I'm just playing it by ear (or breast) and telling my doctor as I see her. All of it has been attributed to my mastectomy. I'd thought so, but it is a relief to hear it from a doctor. Ask your doctor about what you're feeling. This way you know for sure. I'm sorry to say I'm still feeling some of the pain after 1 year. I will keep in mind it can last 3 years. P.S. This site is great! It allows us to share what we're feeling and that helps.

There is nerve regeneration that can be quite painful. I also have phantom pain where the tumors used to be. The radiated side will be more painful than the other side as well. I’m 8 years post treatment i still get pain. Sadly I don’t think it ever ends. They put implants under the muscle which isn’t natural and causes constant strain. Just wait to the phantom inching starts that’s a great from hell! Lol.
