What Are The Symptoms Of Mild Lymphedema?

Good morning ladies! I am coming up on four years since my bilateral mastectomy, with thrlympnodes out, and no radiation. Last week I noticed that my wedding rings were feeling very tight and I reprimanded myself for possibly having too much salt the previous day. By the end of the week I couldn’t get my rings on at all. Over the weekend I was becoming concerned that it was possibly a reaction to a new anti-seizure med that my neurologist started me on. I spoke with the neurologist several… read more

Keep the appt for PT, my surgeon said they are not sure why some women get lymphedema and others don't, or why it shows up right away for some, and can be years later for others. The exercises etc. certainly can't hurt.

You might also want to check with a pharmacist, about it being a possible reaction, that is their specialty. Years ago, I was prescribed a med, that my doctor did not believe could be responsible for the side effects I was having. I spoke with the pharmacist, and because it was a newer drug, data was still being collected. (An easy check, as I worked at the hospital at the time, and he was able to reassure me that I could stop that drug without having to wean off) A couple of months later, data showed it was the drug after all! When you talk to the pharmacist, make sure you have the list of all the drugs you are on as sometimes it is not A drug, but an interaction between drugs.

Hope it resolves soon! Hugs!!

Lymphedema is a noticeable swelling because something is interfering with the efficient flow of lymph fluids, so the fluid accumulates. Same thing can happen appearance-wise with blood clots so any swelling should be checked out. Mild lymphedema would have mild swelling. For some the buildup gets so severe, a pump is used to help with getting the fluid to move through the system.

Look into compression sleeves and gauntlet. May help. I get a prescription for the sleeves. I wear only when i am lifting or doing my work out. Look into lymphedema arm brushing.

Definitely can be sleeping position affected; if it gets intense enough it wakes me up after dreaming I’ve got no hands (weird!)
One of my music students had a lumpectomy, chemo & rads this year and also has sensation problems in her little fingers but for her it’s all the time. The question “what is mild lymphoedema?” had me wondering.

@A MyBCTeam Member sounds more like a nerve issue, could it be you notice it more at night (less distractions), or maybe your sleep position adds to it? Chemo gave me neuropathy in hands and feet. My fingertips are still numb, but remember some nights of weird sensations (serious side sleeper), moving and readjusting my position helped. I remember being so excited when I could tell that I had more than one book page or coffee filter between my fingers!! I also had weird tightness with trigger finger spasms. Both situations got better as more time from chemo passed. Hope it eases for you soon, hugs!!
