How Long Does Recovery From A Mastectomy Take?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question šŸ’
Orange County, CA

Hi all - I was diagnosed Stage 1, hormone positive. Had a single mastectomy 16 days ago. Last visit w Dr he said I need to stop moving and rest because the drain level is still high. I thought Iā€™d be back to work by this week. I guess my expectations were unrealistic. For those that had mastectomies, How long did it take to get back to work?

I'm surprised your doctor did not give you an estimate for your back to work date. Too much moving, too soon. does increase the fluid build-up, and if the amount coming from the drain is too high, they will not remove them. You need to take it easy so your body can learn how to handle the fluid, especially if you had any lymph nodes removed. You don't want to have the drains in too long, and you don't want to put yourself at risk of developing lymphedema- which can end up being a lifetime issue. Rest, heal, do your exercises to get your range of motion back. I had the single mastectomy and my surgeon would not release for at least a month. I had chemo after surgery, so I need approval from both (the surgeon and the oncologist) to go back to work, so I was out for 8 weeks. Gentle hugs!

Recovery time from a mastectomy can vary based on several factors:

- Job Requirements: If your job involves heavy lifting or physical exertion, you may need more time to recover
- Adjuvant Therapy: If you receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery, your recovery time may be longer.
- Breast Reconstruction: If Show Full Answer

Recovery time from a mastectomy can vary based on several factors:

- Job Requirements: If your job involves heavy lifting or physical exertion, you may need more time to recover.
- Adjuvant Therapy: If you receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery, your recovery time may be longer.
- Breast Reconstruction: If you have breast reconstruction surgery at the same time, recovery may take longer, but overall recovery time might be shorter compared to having the procedures separately.

Typically, the average hospital stay is one or two nights. Some people may need several weeks to months before feeling ready to return to work. Always consult with your healthcare team to determine the best recovery plan for you.

I had Invasive ductal, tumor was 29 cm, I had a bilateral. Surgeon said Lumpectomy. I asked her to take both. I am 65 and have some heart issues, I wanted to heal now while i am young :) My Surgeon is the best, her superpower is sewing. she is still very attentive 4 months later. I am about to finish "preventative Radiation" 25 rounds. Do what's best for you ASK 1000's of questions, I write mine down on index cards for each AND ask Surgeon Dr onco questions, Rad Dr Onco questions, I even ask the Lympho specialist Onco questions. Bye the way at my hospitals Lympho clinic started massaging "manuel draining" my lymph nodes. FEELS AWSOME, ask about that my insurance pays for so many sessions.

Hi Najmeh,
The cancer was only in my right breast. I had all of the right breast tissue removed, a few lymph nodes removed for testing, and an expander was placed in my breast for reconstruction. Hope that helps answer your question.

Hi, I am very new in this, tell me what did you mean by stage one? Was cancer spread in your both breasts? Was cancer in one breast, but you did Double, because of the shape?
Thank you for your answer.šŸ€
