Second Surgery For Implants

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi! I had insertion of temporary expanders at time of my total mastectomy. Completed chemo 3/1/23/ . Insertion of permanent implants 5/1. The plastic surgeon told me it was a long difficult surgery and she wants me to have another surgery to reshape the "square" breast. (The other breast is rounded.) She more or less said she was tired after the first breast!!! I'm angry-then get an assistant surgeon. Why should I have to put myself at risk for another surgery because she was too tired to… read more

Only you know if the planned outcome is worth the additional surgery. For me, at 62 it was Nope, from the get-go. I had the single mastectomy, no reconstruction- that is what suited my personality. My only regret is that we even have to make these choices. This is a You Do You- scenario. Whatever feels right to you, is what you should do.

Question- given what has happened so far, is it a matter of whether the surgery is the right thing- OR this surgery with the same doctor as before? Perhaps meeting a different surgeon and getting a second opinion would help clear your mind about the path to take.

Keeping you in prayers!

Since you are wondering how a prosthesis would feel I suggest you go to a store that sells mastectomy bras, etc.
Four years ago I bought what is called an “Active” prosthesis. I believe it is 85% the weight of a regular prosthesis. It has air vents & is softer as well. It is similar to my Swim prosthesis.
I occasionally wonder what it would be like to have reconstruction but when I hear about infections & other problems, I am happy I don’t have that to deal with. There is enough to deal with!
Best of luck to you!

Well ladies, I felt a great sense of relief when I decided not to go through more reconstructive surgery. One of the clinchers was not wanting to force my body (skin) to do something it obviously rejected. I do believe I’d have a lifetime of problems with it.
I got fitted with a prosthesis and new bras and already feel better. Not to say I’m used to my bare body yet, but I only wear the prosthesis when I go out.
Like others have said, the choice is very personal and what’s right for one isn’t right for all. I did try reconstruction and wanted it to work. But now I can go back to decisions like which face cream to wear!

I felt so relieved once I put the halt to reconstructive surgery and sucked it up for a prosthesis for my missing left breast. Not comfortable looking myself over in the mirror, but I’ll get over it and forego what could easily become a heartbreak roller-coaster. Good luck 🌷
