Question For Reconstruction Via Expanders/replaced With Implants, Did You Require Additional Surgeries Post Implant Placement? If Yes, What

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
San Ramon, CA

I am in the process of reconstruction, I have expanders in and then will have them replaced with implants in a few months. I just learned that some people require fat grafting to improve their appearance. If you had reconstruction with expanders/implants, please share your experiences. What did you have (just implant replacement for the expanders, additional touch up surgery, etc.). When I searched the Q&A, I only found one recent post. Thanks!

I had expanders, then later implants placed. At the time of the implants placement, my plastic surgeon did a small amount of fat grafting to improve the symmetry and shape. The implant placement and minor fat grafting was a short outpatient surgery. I only needed over the counter pain meds for a couple of days. I felt so good that I had to remind myself not to do too much until all healing was complete. For reference, I am 61 years old. I am a teacher and missed only 4 days of work (day of the surgery on a Friday, then M-W of the following week.

@A MyBCTeam Member Thank you for sharing! Were you aware that the fat grafting would be done? My plastic surgeon hasn't brought it up at all, however I have another appointment next week and want to make sure I understand why it is done. Also, are your implants over your chest muscle or under? Thanks again!

Yes, additional surgeries may be required post-implant placement. Here are some potential reasons:

- Symmetry Adjustments: Surgery on the unaltered breast, such as a reduction or lift, to achieve better symmetry
- Complications: Addressing complications like infection, implant displacement, or capsular contracture.

- Complications: Addressing complications like infection, implant displacement, or capsular contracture.
- Revisions: Adjustments to improve the aesthetic outcome or replace implants over time.

It's important to discuss these possibilities with your surgeon to understand the risks and benefits.
