Has Anyone Had Any Experience With Tamoxien And If So What? Particularly Interested In People Who Are Post Menaposual

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

My doctors are advising that I take Tamoxifen but I am a little leery of the side effect that include blood clots, posible weight gain and other more insidious possibilities. Has anyone taken that drug and what was your experience?

My oncologist is recommending five years. I have had no problem with weight gain - in fact I have intentionally lost weight (was overweight when diagnosed) by daily walking (up to three miles every morning now!) and eating healthy and controlling portions. My doc says she wishes all her cancer patients would do what I am doing. Quite an encouragement. A positive outlook helps immensely!

I am post-menopausal and have been on Tamoxifen for two years, with absolutely no adverse side effects. In fact, I was able to discontinue medication prescribed for my osteoperosis because Tamoxifen helps build bone density!

I have been taking Tamoxifen for five years. Absolutely no side effects. At my recent oncology visit, I was told the longer I keep taking it the better, according to recent studies. I am postmenopausal so that may explain the lack of nasty side effects. I also have regular gynecological exams. My oncologist told me the risk of uterine cancer is very low. Sometimes confusing information!

I’ve been struggling to tolerate Tamoxifen since the fall. It was suggested I try taking it every other day. I cut the whole dose in half. Still my hip pain made walking any distance, as in shopping or going up stairs problematic. Also I either cannot fall asleep or alternately wake up every two hours. Another issue was a change in vision. I had an eye exam and no physical problems were the cause. I am sound sensitive and crankier too. It’s a struggle to maintain my weight, but am told not to gain even though the med causes weight gain. It’s frustrating!
