Breast Pain And Swelling After Radiation

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I had DCIS in my left breast; 2 tumors, both Stage 1, lymph nodes negative, and LCIS. I had a lumpectomy (DCIS) with reconstruction (larger amt of breast tissue remove because of LCIS, and nipple needed reattched. I developed a hematoma, size of golf ball post-op. Finished radiation June 1, 2012 and now when I get out of bed in the morning my left breast aches as I sit up and is visibly swollen. Also, the left side of the breast is still numb. It continues through out the day, and I cannot wait… read more

Yes, I had lumpectomy for DCIS left breast with 3 negative nodes on 2/28/2011 and 8 wks radiation. I began with swelling immediately after radiation and developed the hematoma (seroma) which was drained twice in 2012 (swelling/pain disappeared for 6mos) and returned December 2012. January 2013 had it drained again and had schleratherapy done and hopefully it will not return. The swelling and pain is gone as of this time.

I finished RADs March 2012 and I have had swelling every since my drain from the MX was removed (Sept 2011). I've had the fluid removed once and it came back the next day. The Drs say not to worry about it as long as it doesn't become infected (hot, sore)and it may eventually go away. I also still have sharp pains in there occasionally. The numbness is permanent, so I'm told.

Thank you all so much for your input. I appreciate your time in answering my question. I called my surgeon today to ask her advice, awaiting her return call. I had another scare this Jan. 2013 but with the right breast. So I had to have an MRI, right breast looked ok but left breast (original BC site) showed fluid. My Radiation Oncologist said the fluid isn't normal this far out of radiation (9months)?? I'm concerned as to what's happening.
