Any Advice For Losing Chemo Weight?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I just finished chemo and looks like I gained weight instead of loosing it. The Dr says it's the steroids. Does anyone have any advice on the best foods and exercise to do to drop the weight?

I agree with what Marilyn said, drink lots of water and eat healthy. Also, start exercising. Diet and exercise have a huge effect on lowering your chances of recurrence. So working out daily and eating a diet full of vegetables and fruits will not only make you skinnier, it will help keep cancer at bay.

That being said, do not get discouraged if it takes a long time to lose the weight. Chemo puts you into that brief period of menopause and that seriously messes with your metabolism. Your body literally slows down your metabolism to produce more fat because the creation of fat also produces estrogen. So a low metabolism and weight gain is your body's attempt to keep your hormones in line.

It took me quite awhile to get the weight off. I am 18 months from my last chemo and I finally feel like my body is back to its pre-chemo state (granted I only finished herceptin in may and im not sure if that slowed me down in terms of getting back to normal). My metabolism feels like I can eat more than a carrot without gaining a pound or two.

My point is that chemo had alot of longer term side effects that can take awhile to "wear off". So work out to stay healthy and feel amazing and your body will eventually catch up with your weight loss goals.

I'm still fighting it after over a year after treatment. My muscles are still very weak and "working out" is very hard..

What about the new injection medication for weight loss? They say it curbs appetite and craving sweets. I am tempted to try, just to stop the cravings and to lose the 15 lbs I have gained.

When I was on the chemo I went the opposite way I could not gain any weight. Then when I came off of that I started to gain weight but gradually. I just kept track of how much weight I was gaining in a couple of days. Any more than two pounds in a couple days is a problem . I was afraid of retaining to much water and other health issues developing. I know some steroids can cause what I call water weight gain face hands etc. You some what bloat up and once your off them your body somewhat readjust itself. Caffeine is a diuretic but I would consult my medical oncologist before doing anything.
