Does Anyone Have Experience With The Paragard Copper IUD?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I will be starting Tamoxifen soon. Of course, I can't be on any kind of birth control involving hormones, and the Paragard copper IUD is the only option besides condoms. I recently had one placed and am experiencing its effects while my body adjusts, but once I start taking the Tamoxifen, I wonder what I should expect... Does someone out there have this copper IUD? What's been your experience with it? Thanks.

I have it. I've had mine for about 2 years now. All in all, it isn't bad for me. I have longer periods and experienced spotting occasionally in the beginning. I'd say my PMS is worse than whenI was on birth control. I tend to have a day of severe fatigue around ovulation. And another day or two of exhaustion around the start of my period. I also tend to have night sweats the day or two before my period.

I have no idea of how the paraguard affects my cycle compared to how it would normally be. I just assume all the above things are my normal cycle since it has honestly been so long since I had a non BC cycle.

It has taken a year or two for my body to readjust its hormones and cycle since chemo. I'm still figuring it all out :)

I've had a the paragard copper IUD for over a year and a half and love it. No negative side effects that I can pinpoint to the IUD as I'm currently taking tamoxifen and my period is still very irregular after going through chemo and being on tam.

All the cycle changing is hard to know what the true cause if it all is... No more BC Pill? Chemo? Tamoxifen? Entering menopause? Who knows. The important thing is that you find something effective and that you can tolerate and unfortunately you won't know until you give it a try. I hope more users respond to your question here because its a really good question. Good luck!

So I'm going through my second period now with the Paragard. Lots of bad cramping, spotting... I really hope it gets better because between feeling bad and bleeding/spotting, I'm left with about two good weeks to actually have sex! Wish me luck. thanks for sharing your experience.

Thank you so much! We'll see how I do on it. I haven't been on birth control in many years, and my cycles were pretty regular. We'll see how I do on it. It's been a rough few first weeks, but today I'm finally feeling optimistic about it, and knowing it's worked for you for 2 years is a big plus. Thanks.
