Should Your Oncologist Order A Blood Test At Least Every 6 Months?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Buxton, ND

I am 2 1/2 years out from finishing my chemo/radiation treatments. I have seen my oncologist every 3-6 months since. He has only ordered blood work once or twice since I finished treatment. I think it is odd that he is not checking it more often. I was a diagnosed with stage 3A breast cancer I had a 5cm tumor and 6 out of 22 lumph nodes tested positive also. I had a double mastectomy. I just find this strange.. Does anyone else??

It really looks like once surgery, chemo & radiation are done we really aren't seen very often. I can understand not going in for a visit monthly but as long a woman is taking some kind of drug, every 3 months blood work or something should be done. Insurance companies probably refuse to pay for 'maintenance treatment' and will only pay for diagnostic treatments. Its really not the doctors fault. There are guidelines how many office visits they will pay for yearly.

Holly, You should be getting blood work every time you see the Oncologist.
I'm surprised that you are not getting the blood work every time you see the Oncologist. I find it strange too. I would speak out and ask them to do a blood test.
I have discovered one has to be proactive or else you get neglected.
Take care.

I am supposed to alternate between the breast surgeon and the radiation oncologist every 6 months for 2 years. They check my breasts and answer questions.
In that mix, I also see the medical oncologist twice a year for 2 years. She does the same.

Then I go back to just seeing the gynecologist and Internist yearly.

Any unusual pain anywhere, a cough for no apparent reason, a change in urine/bowel habits or sudden digestive issues. Just take notice. Doctors will order scans and insurance companies will pay for them if its diagnostic. They won't pay for them if its just to check. Pretty much sucks when a woman who has been treated for Breast cancer can't even get a scan to make sure it hasn't returned somewhere else in the body unseen by a mammogram.

So, we all have to be detectives and really think and check for any health clues.

Then we have to self advocate and demand to be checked.

So, we are all Sherlock Holmes and have each other here to be proactive….
