Which Implants Are Better, Saline Or Silicone?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had a bilateral mastectomy on June 25th, and now have expanders. In a few weeks I'll have to decide between saline and silicone implants. Everyone says that silicone feels more natural. But I'm worried about the possibility of "silent leaking" and having to have an MRI every 2-3 years to check for this. (They haven't proven that silicone leaking into your body causes health problems -- but who knows?!?) Saline has a higher chance of "capsular contraction." My PS says that saline implants… read more

All the changes take time. Not a month or two, but close to a year if not more. There are times when I wake up in the morning and my implants seem to be a seperate part of me until I start moving around and then they adjust. This stuff is not easy and we deserve a hellofva lot of credit

Hi, WholeHearted62!! I also have silicone, the gummy gel kind. My kids laugh that mommy has gummy bear boobs. The theory is that IF there is a tear, the gel substance will seal the tear and prevent leakage. My ps has said I should probably not have to ever replace them, which is nice, because my skin is still so thin and delicate. That may change over the next 40 years, but for now, it's comforting to know that the implant will always stay in the pocket. I was also instructed to do massage as a way of keeping the implant free in the pocket which helps to prevent scar tissue from forming around the implant.

I was supposed to have my exchange surgery this week, but (for reasons not related to my breasts) it's been postponed. I've opted for saline. There's a higher likelihood of rippling and dimpling with saline, esp because I'm thin, but oh well. I just don't like the idea of putting foreign substances into my body. I think the silicone contains heavy metals. (I was looking on the FDA report at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/cdrh_docs/pdf4/P0.... I'm not a scientist, so I don't know how to read this very well.) The FDA has approved the gummy bear implants, and it's true they're safer than the old silicone. Any silent leakage would usually stay inside the breast pockets, according to my doctor. But I guess I'm old-fashioned. I'd rather have salt water. And I'm old enough (62) to where I'm just not that worried about how I look without clothes. Glad to be alive, and have a few more good years ahead of me!

@A MyBCTeam Member glad to hear/read from someone who actually has them. And can compare them to other implants.

My PS said the gummy bears are the best implants. I've felt them and yes, I agree they are very natural feeling.
