What Questions Should I Ask My Oncologist?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question šŸ’
Riverside, CA

I have my appointment with my oncologist tomorrow and I would like to know what questions I should ask other than the usual: What type of chemo? Side effects?

Anyone have any suggestions?

I asked for copies of my reports as I am a visual learner and I came with a friend and a note pad. I wanted to know the type of cancer, staging ( if you have had sx) type of chemo drugs and if it was to be dose dense, how many cycles, if radiation will be needed. Is there a no site BC support group to attend. Where will the infusions take place. How long will each see ion last. Pre-meds and post meds needed to manage side effects. When to report complications,(fever, bleeding etc.) hope that helps.

I think the side effects are the most important. I take a shot of avonex interferon for MS 1x per week. The nurse who taught us how to give the shot gave me great tips about how to lessen the side effects. Drink plenty of water the day of shot etc. Her tips really worked. Get a pill to help with nausea. I take an anti nausea pill, which is also great. If needed is there help for depression.

Also ask for majic mouthwash.

Also whatever you do...do not get constipated.
Miralax is great and start a couple of days before you start your chemo.
I had severe stomach cramps and my onc called me in
Something for it.
Just went to see what is was but of course i threw the bottle away and did not write it down!
i know it started with a be...
I also drank aloe from the health food store.
it was very soothing to my stomach.
I was never sick with chemo just this at the start.
good luck and e-mail me and i will mal you the list.
It was a lifesaver!
