Drains And Stairs
What's the issue with stairs and drains? I want to sleep upstairs in my room/bed when I come home from my BMX. Can I go up the stairs to my room? What if I go up only once in several days so I'm not up and down all the time? Can I go up the flight of normal carpeted strait stairs or should I move my bed downstairs first before surgery?
As far as I know that doesn't have anything to do with it. Sleeping in a recliner is because you can't sleep on your sides and I tried the 1st night home and couldn't get out of bed, you can't push with your arms. My husband and daughter had to push me up to get out of bed, went to the bathroom and headed for the recliner.
I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfasts in bed the week-end after my BMX. As of that Monday, my husband brought me my coffee and Wall Street Journal before going to work each day. It was up to our teen sons (15&14 at the time) to help me get out of my nightgown and into my shirt and they were so helpful, gentle and kind.
According to our pediatrician, and I agree, it was good for our sons to see that I needed their help, sometimes for the simplest, silliest things. But, he also said that few parents are willing to let their teens see them as vulnerable and in need of help.
We called it "Payback Time" and it made us closer. God works in mysterious ways.
Our bedroom is upstairs and I went up and down the stairs several times a day in the 10 days I had my drains.
my bed was the most comfortable place to sleep in my warren of pillows so I went to bed after coming home from the surgery center.
I was also told to walk to regain/maintain my strength and not to become one with my bed.
Initially my husband or sons would walk with me but as the days progressed, I walked by myself.
I have had up to 4 drains in at a time for multiple surgeries and I never heard anything about stairs. I live in a split level and went up and down stairs all the time. Where did you hear that there was an issue? Perhaps a quick call to your doctor will answer this question. Be well.
Hi Kim~ I wouldn't think stairs would be an issue- other than the obvious exertion. I can give you one good piece of advice. TAKE A LANYARD with you to the hospital!! Pin the drains to the clip/ ring/ etc. on the bottom of it. MUCH more comfortable than pinning to your hospital gown and/or clothes. I wore mine around the clock after my reconstruction; so much nicer than pinning!
