Why so some women get Herceptin and Perjeta and others get Herceptin only?

Not a Dr. Just had to do all this research for my BC...Prejeta is only approved for Neoadjuvent setting (before Surgery) or Metastatic setting. The first because they can quickly see how it works or that is works and trails take less time to complete and get approved. Metastatic because you usually throw everything at it a second time and there is some research that says you can develop a bit of a resistance to Herceptin. I hope this helps.

My oncologist said that in order to start Perjeta you have to start it at the same time as the Herceptin. Herceptin is an older drug that has been around for awhile and Perjeta has only been in protocol for a couple of years. The way he explained it, Herceptin grabs to top of the HER+ cell and Perjeta grabs the bottom of the HER2+ cell and they lock together to keep the cell from attaching to other healthy cells. According to the nurses with the Perjeta hotline they say the same thing for some reason you can't add Perjeta after starting the Herceptin.

The first time I was diagnosed in 2012 I got chemo and herceptin for year...then stopped for the 3 months, I came back and had cancer again end of 2013. And then they added prejeta and I'm on herceptin and prejeta forever.
