I have a blood clotting disorder called "factor V Leiden" so I can't take estrogen treatments like tamoxifen. The alternative is to induce menopause and start arimidex. I have started taking lupron to induce the menopause and shut down my ovaries. I have the choice of sticking with lupron until I am completely through my change or can have an oophorectomy. I was already into menopause. I was on anti-hormonal medication which has a 5% probability of causing uterine cancer. I also had a history of uterine fibroids and my gynecologist was very agreeable to do a prophylactic total hysterectomy and bilateral ooperectomy.
I have been on Lupron for the past few months as well as Arimidex. I asked my oncologist about surgery vs Lupron and he said he would like to hold off anymore surgeries right now. I had a diep bmx in September and will have a revision procedure this Thursday as well as a second surgery in February. So far the Arimidex and Lupron are doable. I am 46 and showed no signs of menopause before BC.
I'm about to have my ovaries removed. I see it's been a year since you asked this question and was wondering if you decided to have the oopherectomy and how you are doing.
