With Reconstruction At Time Of Mastectomy, How Did You Choose Your Surgeon?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Bridgeport, WV

When considering Mastectomy with reconstruction, did you just automatically go with the plastic surgeon at your treating hospital? If not, how did you find the right place to go? It is feeling overwhelming to worry about finding the right plastic surgeon while trying to learn about the disease and make the right treatment choices. Mastectomy adds a lot of complicating matters, it seems. To complicate matters, I live in a small town without tons of options.

I picked my PS before mastectomy because I was able to have an implant put in at time of mastectomy. I did not need expanders. @A MyBCTeam Member

@ Terrik_WV I saw oncologist surgeon at MD Anderson in Houston, TX who then she referred me to plastic surgeon who is also oncologist. They work together and are the BEST!!! You might want to look into it. Don't know where you live but I'm sure you can call MD Anderson in Houston and ask if there is a place you can go close to where you live that is similar to it. The surgeon oncologist who removed both my breast is Dr. Meric who is Director of surgeons & #1 in the nation. That tells you everything. They have the best doctors.

If you go on the website of plastic surgeons in your area, they usually have before and after pictures of their breast reconstructions. See which ones look the best.
I got a referral from my breast surgeon (who is a female) and asked her who she would use if it was her. She sent me to an excellent doctor and my reconstruction turned out beautifully.

You need to be comfortable with/like/love all your doctors, so if you don't like the initial PS your BS recommends, but all means, ask your another recommendation until you are 100% conformable. I just happened to love all 3 of my docs that all worked as a team...got luck...awesome women, all 3 of them. You likely will be constrained by whether your PS can operate at same hospital as your BS, but even with that constraint you should have multiple options to consider.

Also, none of us want to go there but I just had revision surgery. And it was very easy. So nothing is etched in stone. There are always options.
