How Long Before Periods Returned?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Concord, MA

I was 41 when I started chemo and my periods stopped after my first treatment. I did TH and AC, lumpectomy, radiation, and more herceptin to complete a full year of treatments. I finished the herceptin last november and started tamoxifen last may. I'm 42 now and I'm wondering what my chances are of my period coming back. My doctor said I'm probably still ovulating, but I can't tell. I've had the opposite of vaginal dryness since starting the tamoxifen, and actually have to wear a thin panty… read more

It may depend on your age as far as switching from tamoxifen to a different drug. I was told i would be on tamoxifen for a year and if i am considered to be in menopause after a year i may be switched.

I dont think so. They told me tamoxifen for ten years, i guess they factor the possibility of going into menapaus in the equation.

I was diagnosed @A MyBCTeam Member. Lt mastectomy, chemo x4 months, no radiation, tamoxifen x 1 month . My periods stopped after 2 nd treatment. It has been 9 years. I was considered post menopausal after 1 year.

So if tamoxifen is for premenopausal women and you're considered postmenopausal if your period doesn't come back in a year, do you switch to a different drug?

Im 29, did chemo, and im about to finish up herceptin in march. My period stopped with my first chemo, and still hasnt returned. I asked my doctors about it, and she said, "it may come back, and it may not." but, they did warn me in the beginning that chemo could put my ovaries to sleep, and that it was "highly unlikely" they would wake up. My oncologist told me that if your periods dont return after a year, they consider you menapausal, oh joy..... So, the chances of me getting pregnant are pretty slim to nil.
