Diet During Chemo

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I asked my oncologist's nurse about foods to eat or not eat during chemo thinking I would be given a list of foods to help but there doesn't seem to be one. Did anyone follow any particular diet or can you suggest foods or supplements to raise my immune system or help eliminate side affects? Is coffee or tea ok? Appreciate any ideas that worked for you.

Hi Roseann
I've had the same questions for my oncologist about good diet. B/C of Crohns I've always eaten well, not expensive but well...good foods-organic. I don't get a lot of useful info either. Actually not a lot of GOOD oncologist here in my small town. I made an appointment w/ a naturopath to help me w/ questions like this and other natural ways to extend my life. Mayo clinic gave me 2 years a 4 years ago. I'm tired of being treated as if I'm one of the cookie cutter Cancer patients. My suggestion? Eat organic, fresh and low in fats/sugar. Common sense stuff. Wish you the best 😄

My taste for sugar is completely messed up Anything sweet is sickening sweet. Yea me but I tend to crave salty stuff ie Chips. I think it's whatever you can tolerate as long as you can eat something and drink 6-8 glasses of water everyday. Remember no salad or buffet bars - too many germs

check out this site. I don't know what type of chemo you are taking, but check the other articles too.

You should also avoid raw vegetables - but especially Organic, when your resistance is the lowest (mine was the 2nd week after chemo. I took it every 3 weeks), because there is a greater chance of pathogens from the "organic fertilizers", i.e. poop, used in organic gardening to give you parasites. Under normal circumstances, your immune system would kill these. Conventional veggies, with their chemicals, are actually safer for you at this time. I am totally for eating Organic as much as possible, only not for that very crucial time when your immune system is at it's lowest!!

I am a diabetic and they told me to eat anything that I have a taste for because the chemo will make you nauseous. Also I got a tip from the nurse, east with plastic utensils it will prevent you from getting a taste in your mouth when eating. Do not drink out of metal cans either. Sores in your mouth can be problematic they will give you a prescription to help with that. Sleep when you can and remember, you and your body are going through a lot. Be kind to yourself and this is one time it's okay to put yourself first. I wish you well, and if I can be of help in anyway contact me.
