Food Cravings During Chemo & Diet
Does anyone have food cravings during chemo? I’m finding all I want is carbs which I didn’t usually eat. Also are you changing your diets during this treatment or eating normal ?
I think the issue of chemo and antioxidants is a controversial one with multiple opinions. The NCBI article is from 2007 and to me outdated being 10 years old. My oncologist at MSK advised they really don’t know and more studies are needed, so best to avoid them during treatment to be safe.

Eat what you can tolerate - I lived on mashed potatoes, fruit pies and cream. I still lost 10 pounds! There is no evidence that antioxidants interfere with chemotherapy. This from the National Institute of Health,

All I’ve been eating is carbs since my treatment started in October. French toast. Pasta pizza. And lots of ice cream. Last Sunday I decided to cut out carbs because it always increased my energy in the past. At Tuesday’s treatment I had lost 3 lbs and I was gaining and average of 3 or 4 lbs a week. My side effects after that treatment were much less. I didn’t feel as achy and I didn’t spend almost 3 days sleeping. I think my body was on a constant sugar crash. And sugar causes inflammation so I think not eating it helped my body pain. I can’t wait to be weighed tomorrow to see how much I’ve lost. And I feel so much better. Sugar and carbs always had a bad effect on me but my nurses kept telling me eat what my body wants and worry about the weight after treatment. But I was up over 30lbs in 4 months!!!
I think just don’t load up on natural antioxidants like blueberry smoothies while on chemo. Eating well rounded and healthy is what I was told. I think too, a Mediterranean Diet is the healthiest for cancer.
I craved chocolate, especially chocolate milk for some reason. The steroids + me eating all the junk food I could find mean that I gained over 20 kg (I always ate healthy before my diagnosis though, lots of fruits and vegs).
I couldn't eat mixed salads anymore because of the taste, especially with vinaigrette (bitter/acidic).
I turned towards the sugary food at the time.
I found that chunks of fresh pineapple helped me with dry mouth.
