Is An Itchy Scalp A Sign The Hair Is Going Or Is It Just Another Side Effect Of Chemo?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had my first chemo on March 16th. So far no real bad side effects - tired, acid reflux, one day on the sofa feeling like I was hit by a truck, but now my scalp is itchy and I was wondering if that was a sign of the hair getting ready to fall or is it just another side effect of the chemo? I've been holding off cutting my hair because people keep telling me there is always a chance it won't fall out (doctor says it will) so I'm wondering what this means. Thanks

my husband went with me to get my head shaved. He is ex military and still keeps his bald, so he had more hair than I did! He called me his very own GI Jane. I did find that the wig will fit different with hair versus without. My hair was already short, so my short wig worked fine. The only ones who saw me without it was close family. I can say that it was nice not to have a "bad hair day" for 4 months, but now that it has grown back (and came back curly) it is hard to get use to. Hate to say it but dealing with a wig was easier. You can also check with your local American Cancer Society for wigs. They offer one free wig per person, synthetic or real. Saves some $$

Depending on your chemo but if you are on any AC/T regimen it will fall out. Sorry for the bad news. Good luck.

Its the folicals....yes you are correct its the chemo that has effected the hair folicals and ready to come out. My scalp was so senative. I neve wore a wig, bandanas worked best for me. I hihly suggest some comfy sleep caps for the night. Keeps the hair from falling out all over the pillow, keeps your scalp covered which is more comforatble while sleeping - well for me it was. headcovers.com had some inexpensive terry sleep caps. Maybe $9.99- 12. They were great!
