How Do You Feel With Anatomical Silicone Implants After Expanders?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi! I'd be very grateful if you could answer the following questions, specially those who have gone through the same type of breast reconstruction. I had a DMX. NO RADIATION. I've got bilateral expanders in at present. I'm wondering how would it be to have anatomical silicone breast implants: 1) How would they feel? 2) How is it the appeareance? 3) is it true that when you flex the pectoral muscle, when opening a jar for example, the implant gets contracted, it moves too? What could be done to… read more

I had my exchange in June of 2015, and had the shaped gummy bears put in. I don't have any of the hamburger bun issues the other ladies are talking about (although that's such a great description!). I think my implants look great. They don't have the hang of my actual breasts - they look more like 20-year-old breasts on a 47-year-old body. That, in and of itself, is different and weird, but overall I'm very happy with how they look.

They are much softer than the expanders, though not soft. I've recently discovered that they take on the ambient temperature, so sometimes they are cool to the touch if it's been cold outside. They do move when the pectoral muscle is flexed, but that doesn't bother me. They look great if I'm sitting up straight. If I slouch one of them has a slight indentation.

Because these are contoured, my PS put in drains during surgery because he had people with fluid build up and it shifted the implant. It's not a big deal when it's round, but when it's shaped it could wind up looking really weird if it moved. And I output a lot of fluid (as I did with my BMX) so I had those in a while. I consider that a complication.

I'm very happy with my choice and outcomes. I also did nipple reconstruction and I'm going in for 3-D tattoos soon. Best of luck to you. I'm sure you'll be happy to have those expanders out!

I had surgery 2 weeks ago, so I know its early, but like @A MyBCTeam Member said, hamburger bun glued to your chest is a great description unfortunately! they don't move.

I have never been happy with mine. It looks like a hamburger bun glued to the chest. It never "settled". It's been 6 1/2 years. I experienced pectoral spasms for at least 4 years, and then there's the fact that it has no feeling. That is most annoying.

I can partly answer your question as follows:
1) I have silicone "gummy bear" implants and they feel good - not like a natural breast, but they move. 2) appearance is pretty normal, although they take months to fully settle 3) If the implant is under the muscle (which most are) there is nothing you can do to avoid it when opening a jar or heavy door, etc. it's just your new normal. 4) I did DTI so went directly to implants and didn't have expanded, but I've heard that surgery and recovery is nothing compared to mastectomy. Hope this helps!
