Should Your Ovaries Be Removed If You Are Over 50? How Many Of You Were Told No?
I can't believe so many oncologists and surgeons disagree on this question. Mine said no. I;m 68.
In an effort to block recurrence of breast cancer, many doctors say to remove the ovaries. Mine say no. I know they're arent producing a lot of hormone but every little bit that hinders recurrence should be considered, dont you agree?
I dislike the fact that doctors don't spell out their reasoning when others doctors say yes, remove the ovaries. I'm wondering if the insurance companies have… read more
My mother is 78 and has to have a total hysterectomy. She is a BRCA gene carrier which we just found out after my diagnosis at 48. She is a carrier and has never had breast cancer. Our case was brought up to the City of Hope And their response was this;
"If she got ovarian cancer would you treat her for it?"
Of course the answer is yes. She is healthy and they would absolutely treat her for it...
So they said if you would treat her for it then you need to prevent it.
I had to have mine removed because of the gene thing also but even with having them removed I have to be on an estrogen blocker for 10 years. I asked why and that's when I learned we produce estrogen in our fat too so... I'm on Femara but luckily no side effects... Maybe lack of weight loss but that might also be the martinis😉
@ JoAnnSurvivor: I totally agree with you, I'm so sick of dr. appts, clinics & hospitals! I'm tired of being tired & I'm tired of all the meds and their side effects. Now I have to go to another dr. to see about taking meds to counteract the side effects of the other meds. It just goes on & on, all I want is to feel "normal" again and get back to living my life. When I had a bilateral mastectomy, I did it with the idea that at a later date & would have breast reconstruction. Now, I can't imagine starting a procedure that could take 6 months to a year to complete. The surgeon that did the mastectomy, left my chest a real mess. I can't even bring myself to make the appt. to have that mess fixed. I'm having fantasies of flight, I just want this nightmare to stop, but of course I know it won't. At least I can go into this chat room, vent my feelings & find other women that I can relate to.
I'm 53, and I've also been told that I don't need my ovaries removed. I was told it's because with all the chemo and hormone blockers, the ovaries will not produce, i.e., you will be in menopause. I questioned it as well. My surgeon told me that it's more risky to remove the ovaries, and put me through such a surgery, especially going through the chemo right now. I guess it sort of makes sense to me, as I haven't had a period since I started chemo. I agree, though, there's that little bit of me that wonders, should they be removed?

Hi long time since I wrote to you my full time position at our own business in Nutrition kind of takes up all my time.
Anyway I have not had any MD. or Oncologist tell me that I should have my ovaries removed . I have had a few appt.'s with a radio tech tell me they look normal . As I had a few instances of pain on one side. Actually many years prior to my breast Cancer in 2012 and years after .
Wishing you all the best in 2017!
Well the girl who ultrasounded my ovaries said "Theyre about the size of a shriveled up pea." I said, "GEE THANKS". you a-hole. lol hahahahahahahaha... guess that means my ovaries aren't producing squat and that's why theyre telling me not necessary to remove them.
I will be 69 YEARS OLD on Jan 25, 2017.. ALL GIFTS APPRECIATED.. LOL J/K
