Was just wondering.. have been told I have a vitamin D deficiency. Am sure low vit D can play a part in breast cancer. Anyone know why?

Mine was low too....18. I've been on weekly doses of 50,000 for a couple months. It's now 40. I've read that vitamin d plays a big part in cancer as well as a host of other things. I do have more energy and, in spite of things, my depression has a improved too. Not on any meds for depression. I really think the low vitamin d was the culprit. Good luck too you. Much love to all my BC sisters!

My vitamin D level was 25 at diagnosis, which is low, my onc had me try 3000IU and it went up to 30, he said that wasn't high enough and he moved me up to 5000IU (which is what he takes) and it is 45 or 55 now, I can't remember. The interesting thing is I am out all of the time. I have a desk job, but I run in the morning, try to step outside during the day for a walk, walk my dogs in the evening, do hours of yard work on the weekends, volunteer at a dog shelter which is mostly outside work. I am wondering whether BC makes you low in vitamin D or being low in vitamin D increases your risk for BC. I would think with all of the time I spend outside, that if I am low, everyone would be low.

@kerrybaker - in my situation, I'm stage IV with cancer in my bones. The vitamin D strengthens the bones so I don't get fractures. In an unrelated study, scientists found that 90% of Alzheimer patients had low vitamin D counts. Here is what Susan B Komen site says:

I had low D too. My regular doctor gave me prescip. D meds for 12 weeks (once a week pill), then I take my own D3, even though I am outside with running....go figure.
