Fat Grafting Prior To Reconstruction

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I had a dbl mastectomy and have expanders. My expanders are very painful post radiation and my plastic surgeon said my skin was damaged. He has suggested we do fat grafting prior to reconstruction. Has anyone done this and what was your experience? Thanks

Hi. Yes I had fat grafting twice prior to surgery and it definitely improved the quality of my thin radiated skin. I would recommend it to anyone having reconstruction.

Hi Sadie. I had fat transfer after my exchange surgery. I don't know if my experience will help you but here it is. I had liposuction on my hip areas. The fat was then transferred to my Breast area. The only discomfort for me was the liposuctioned area. I have had no issue with the transfer at all. It was easy enough. Xxxooo Leanne

I am still in chemo and won't start radiation until February or March. My PS mentioned that Radiation may cause damage and we would have to look at all the options. I don't know if he was talking about fat grafting or not. It does scare me. My tumor was 7.1 cm in several places on my left Breast. he already told me he won't be able to use the original incisions which go across my Breasts. So I will have more scarring.

I had 2 rounds fat grafting done, one at the time my expanders where put in, and the grafting was taken from my back buttocks and hips, the second when implants where put in, grafted from my abdomen and upper tummy, area feels like a bad carpet burn, loss of sensation but returns to normal after about 3 months, breast are really jiggly

I have had 3 fat grafts done. It's similar to a mini tummy tuck and is not as painful as you would think. My plastic surgeon used it to use around my implants because my skin is so thin a larger implant would not work. It looked great for the first few weeks, like "stripper boobs". That was because of the slight swelling. They have settled and now look as normal as can be expected. I recommend doing it because it's less painful then a reconstruction. Good luck!!
