Another Tumour Whilst On Chemo

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Warwick, UK

Hi, I was just wondering after finishing fec-t chemo in August I have since felt something in my breast that doesn't feel right. My onco described it as thickening. Could be scar tissue but no where near the original tumour. Is it possible to develop another tumour whilst on taxanes? Also, do many younger women have breast mris? My original tumour wasn't seen on mammogram. Is this possibly due to dense breast tissue? Thanku in advance x

As Many said, breast changes are very common after surgery. However,if you are uncomfortable with your oncologist's answer, speak to your b surgeon. I would love for you to get a second opinion. He/she will be more helpful in determining whether you need an mri.

I would rather be safe and put your mind at ease. Let us know what you decided.Don't 2nd guess yourself, ever.

Hugs, Cindy

Hi @A MyBCTeam Member ... Breasts can change a lot especially when you've been through surgeries, chemo, etc (thickening, scar tissue, fat necrosis are all likely, non-cancerous culprits here). For peace of mind, you should ask your doctor for some sort of scan to ensure it isn't a new tumor. I was 35 at diagnosis (I'm 37 now) and I had an MRI after I discovered my lump/got a mammogram & biopsy. I have had one MRI since then (about 3 months ago... all clear thankfully). I had bilateral mastectomy so mammogram isn't a good option for me now. I had dense breasts and I know the imaging from the MRI provided better imaging than the mammogram when I was being diagnosed. Definitely ask your doctor for an MRI and know I'll be hoping for the best for you!

I have scar tissue as a result of the lumpectomy. I was really concerned when I discovered it. The oncologist thought it was scar tissue, but she ordered a 3D mammogram and a sonogram. Confirmation that it was not cancer was such a relief. Get a second opinion to ease your mind.

Thankyou lovely ladies for ur much appreciated advice. My oncologist was able to feel the lump and has refered me for an urgent ultrasound. The MRI will now replace an annual mammogram. I guess I am a bit naive into thinking I couldn't possibly get another tumour whilst on chemo. I am not stressing tho. Realistically if there is another tumour, I will push for bilateral mastectomy. Thanku lots ladies for ur advice. God bless xxxxxx

Hi @ KerryBarker, to answer your question, yes, you can grow another tumor anywhere in your body while taking chemo. It happens very often. But the only way to be 100% sure what a lump is, is to take it out and send it to pathology. Some types of BC present as a thickening in the breast. My advice to you is to finish your treatments then at least have it biopsied if it's still there. I wish you only the very best. 💗💗💗
