Cold Cap
I have a friend who will be starting chemo and wants to try a cold cap to see if she can keep her hair, but I know nothing about where to get one, if you need a script or even how well they work. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I used penguin cold caps and they worked for me! Some thinning but you couldn't tell. I had 4 chemo rounds. Hope this helps
I could be wrong but I believe the cold cap is for temp and headaches, not hair loss. The scalp will be so sensitive. The LAST thing I wanted was something on my head. I only wore bandanas, no wig. Its hair...it will grow back! Comfort was more important to me. Rather than a cold cap...I HIGHLY suggest a couple sleep caps for nighttime. The scalp will be tender, the hair will fall out and its less emotional when its "contained" and it keeps the head warm. Glad to help with any other suggestions too :)
I just looked it up on the internet and found a provider near me. No precription is needed. Most insurance will not cover it. I met with a rep who allowed me to try it out. This was before I started treatments. I found it very uncomfortable. I decided the cost ($2-$3,000) was not worth it and decides wearing a wig was fine. Not like I'd be the first. The cost is dependent on the number of treatments and length of time of infusions as caps will need to be switched during process. Also dependent on whether you needed their assistance or will do the work yourself.
My sister offered to pay for one during my chemo and I declined, thinking my hair would just grow back ("better than before! is what I was told)..boy was I wrong! I'm still mostly bald, and would love to turn back the clock and at least give it a shot. Although, my once said that he has patients that have used them and their hair all fell out anyway. :(
