Has Anyone "gone Flat" After Bilateral Mastectomy, No Reconstruction? Has Anyone Had Complications W/silicone Implant Reconstruction?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Los Angeles, CA

Hi beautiful girls
I had immediate saline reconstruction after bilateral @@mastectomy in July 2017. Then a couple weeks later, it had to all come out to treat a bad infection. It was one of the worst experiences in my life. Now, I am "on the fence" with my decision down the road to "stay/go flat" and do nothing, or have saline implants/reconstruction? The thought of another surgery or risk for infection scares me. But, emotionally and physically, I'm having a hard time looking the way I do.… read more

I had 3 reconstruction surgeries in 6 months. My implants were still painful and uneven. My PS said he could do more revision surgeries but I would have to wait 6 months to a year and it might take 3-4 surgeries or more. He also said he wouldn't be able to guarantee results. He suggested I wear prothestics over my implants to make them look even. I thought about it for awhile and then decided I wanted them taken out. I am little more than a month from surgery and feel great. My stitches Re still healing but I have so much energy now.

I explanted 5 weeks ago. My ONC and surgwon told me all of my symptoms were from chemo. The day after my implant my brain fog lifted. One month after my surgery I was allowed to exercise and started to walk everyday. Within a week I was up to 5.25 miles and I felt great. So in my case the implants were zapping my energy and messing with my immune system. The best thing is my anxiety is gone. I am thin so my PS would not even consider most flap surgeries. When my implants started to fail he suggested a LAT flap but told me aI would still need a small implant with it. He said my back strength could be compromised forever. I am very active and love to hike and I couldn't imagine doing a surgery that would take that option away from me. Yes,mI have a lot of scars on my chest but I view them as battle scars from my war on cancer. My flat chest does not define me,

I wondered if it helped with the energy. My gosh, the cancer zaps our energy, then all of the hormone meds zap energy, menopause zaps energy, and the implants zap the energy. I regret not having a lumpectomy because this isn’t really quality of life. They made it sound so simple and I feel wrecked!

I have the textured cohesive gel silicone implants. It’s good to hear explant worked!
