Vaginal Bleeding

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Marietta, GA

i am a month post chemo and have not started radiation or hormone therapy. I am post menopausal with last period about 5 years ago. Felt a little crampy last night and this morning. Today to my surprise i had some bright red blood from vaginal area! No I have not had sex recently...
Has anyone else experienced this?

I was post menopausal at chemo, and my ONC told me to be sure to let her know of any vaginal bleeding. Most likely nothing, but good to check it out.

Post menopausal bleeding needs to be checked by a doctor to rule out any other issues. Hope it is nothing to worry about.

Here is some information about vaginal bleeding in the context of breast cancer treatment with tamoxifen:

- Tamoxifen and Vaginal Bleeding: Tamoxifen, a medication used in breast cancer treatment, can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding as a side effect. This bleeding can sometimes be heavy and may be due to hormonal changes induced by the medication.

- Endometrial Cancer Risk: While the vast majority of people using tamoxifen do not develop additional cancers, there is a slightly increased risk of endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterus). Abnormal bleeding can be a symptom of this condition.

- Screening and Monitoring: Some healthcare providers recommend screening for uterine conditions during tamoxifen therapy, especially if abnormal bleeding occurs. This can involve procedures like intravaginal ultrasounds or biopsies to check for abnormalities.

- Treatment Options: If abnormal bleeding is inconvenient or disruptive, certain treatments may help. For example, intrauterine devices (IUDs) like Mirena, which release the hormone levonorgestrel, can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. In some cases, a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) may be considered, especially if the individual does not wish to have more children.

- Consult Your Doctor: It is important to inform your healthcare team about any changes in vaginal bleeding while on tamoxifen. They can help rule out serious issues and discuss the benefits and risks of different treatment options.
