Trying To Decide Lumpectomy Vs Mastectomy

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Samson, AL

I had ductile carcinoma in 2017, had lumpectomy and radiation and tamoxifan. In February of 2020, i was diagnosed with dcis in same spot that other cancer was. Lumpectomy is still an option for me, no radiation and taking anastrozole. Anyone have any opinion or advice?

I opted for double mastectomy and ai. 2 year now no restriction surgery. I am good. My husband was supportive of my choice. Shame on your husband for thinking you unattractive as you are not your boobs and should want you happy. Healthy is the key. As you don't know if it will come back. Remember you are you, not your boobs.

These decisions are so personal - I'm replying a little late here so you have probably decided but if your cancer returned after the first treatment, I would go a different route this time.

I had similar experience and chose to get bilateral mast. with recon. My plastic surgeon put in expanders under pec muscle and I suffered with more pain than I thought was possible. My implant on the radiation side got infected and had to be removed. I was left with one implant and was told that I could get an sgap, fat and skin from butt. You really need to ask a ton of questions and research what it might look like afterwards. I am very unhappy with my decision, wished I would have kept my breasts. I no longer feel or look like a woman to me and my husband finds me unattractive now. Good luck with your choice.
