Can Anyone Tell Their Story/advice About Nipple Sparing Mastectomies?
I had a double nipple sparing mastectomy almost 3 weeks ago. My nipples are a disgusting, scabby, bloody mess. Luckily it doesn't hurt. My plastic surgeon said at my next visit they'll will either start expansion of the spacers or have to remove some tissue from the nipples :(. I've been eating protein every meal, downing as much electrolyte water as possible, and sleeping a lot.
What are your stories/advice? What looks good? When does it look bad like I should call the doctor? Has a nipple… read more
I also did not have any issues, although the PS was expecting me to have trouble. I have read of others who just have thick black scabs and in a few weeks those fall off and there is a pretty pink nipple underneath. I have also read of women who do have necrosis to varying degrees and sadly, have read of a woman losing one or both. Luckily, that seems rare. From what your doc has said to you, it does not sound like he is anticipating much loss, if any.
ALWAYS do what you need to feel more at ease. Call or email your PS and send photos if you need. The surgeon works for YOU, so don’t be shy.
Mine were scabby too but eventually healed up and look okay. I was mostly freaked out that they appear to have scars all the way around as if they were resized. I joked with my family that I suspect the surgeon accidentally mixed up my nipples and gave me someone else's. 🙃
Also, the black peeled off eventually it was really strange. Mine are slightly discolored now. I was in contact with my surgeons when they began to change color. I know my PS was on the fence about letting me keep mine. I was prepared to lose them, but they somehow survived.
Mine looked like a train wreck/horror show after and I almost lost them. My PS let me wait it out, I was so happy he let me let them heal. They were jet black hard scabs. One now looks beautiful, and one looks fairly amazing except for a piece that fell off, but it is what it is. I waited on fills for a few months and it was no fun, but I was ok with giving mine a chance to heal first, and so glad I waited it out!!!
I had a nipple-sparing mastectomy and had no issues w/ my nipples. I think they do some sampling to make sure they are cancer-free, but I didn't see any signs of cuts, scabbing, etc on my nipples. They looked intact (though mashed) right after my surgery. I think I have a pic somewhere of what they looked like a few days after I came home from the hospital, so I'll double check that. Sorry you are going through a difficult healing. I'd say definitely raise your current concerns with your surgeons, if you haven't already. Sending healing thoughts.
