Anyone Who Had A Mastomy With ALND?

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭
Oakland, MI

My surgeon, right before surgery changed the game plan and said she was going to perform an axillary lymph node full removal. This was never discussed at previous appointments so why now. Anyways, wondering if anybody has had long term side effects from this procedure?

After the procedure, you will wake up in a recovery room where nurses and doctors will closely monitor you. You can expect to stay in the hospital overnight or for several days to recover. Post-surgery, your chest muscles and arms will feel sore, and you will have physical limitations, such as not being able to lift heavy objects.

I had my mastectomy with lymph node dissection in 2014. They had told me they were doing this and found 6 of 12 were cancerous. Only thing I still find (and bothers me at times) is some numbness but more feeling tender in that area.

Was your cancer spread beyond your breasts? i believe the lymph nodes are the transporter of the Cancer cells to the rest of the body, So the lymph nodes have to be removed.

P.s. I had my dissection because with my mastectomy they removed 6 nodes and three were positive. So after chemo they went back in and did the full dissection. (Removed 9 more).
