Cellulitis

A MyBCTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been on Arimidex for a 1 1/2 years. In that time I have gotten cellulitis in my left hand, twice. My cancer was on my right breast. I'm not sure why this is happening. I take an antibiotic and it goes away, then comes back. Has anyone else experienced problems with cellulitis?

I had cellulitis prior to my bc diagnosis and treatment. It responded very well to the antibiotics. Have you noticed- even minor scrapes or scratches on your left hand? I would be tempted to use gloves for all housework activities etc, just to protect the skin. Celulitis is an infection. We are used to getting a small cut, scratch, etc. and we can see any infection at the top of the injury. With cellulitis- instead of the infection moving to the surface, it moves between tissue layers- and multiples quickly. Good luck with this second bout of cellulitis. Hugs!

Thank you Sue......it is much better! The swelling has gone down and my fingers don't look like stuffed sausages anymore. My hand isn't boiling hot or red like it was. I can actually move my fingers!!

Well, went to my primary today and he said that I shouldn't have gotten sick from the medication. Kept me on it and told me to make sure I took it with food. It actually feels a little better now, but isn't gone. Had x-rays done and shows arthritis in my joints which would be normal since I used to work for Zippo and banged my hands around for 45 years putting lighters together. I took another pill last night when I ate and everything seemed ok.

Thank you Virginia. I go to my primary Dr. today. This is ridiculous. The joints in my fingers hurt terribly. He gave me a strong antibiotic..........too strong as it came right back up! Time to try something else.............

My son had cellulitis and was treated with IV penicillin, but he developed an allergy to it about a week in, so he was switched to Clindamycin. Since I had gone through it with him, I knew right away when I had it a few years later. I went to the ER since the symptoms flared at night, they wanted to admit me, but there were no beds, so they gave me IV penicillin and sent me home with an Rx to fill the next morning. Huge difference in just 24 hours. The General Rule of Thumb, is that if you don't see improvement after being on the meds for 3 days, it's time to review the meds and consider a change. Hope it clears up soon! Hugs!
