Delay In Starting AI
Hi -
I have a history of blood clots in my family along with a couple of other factors that prevented my oncologist from putting me on Tamoxifen after my lumpectomy and radiation. She said I need to be menopausal (pre, post?) to take an AI. I get my hormone levels checked every six months, and I don't appear to be nearing menopause yet. I'm nervous that the longer I wait on the AI, the higher the chance of my DCIS recurring. Am I worried for nothing? I had the lumpectomy in October 2022… read more
If you are not menopausal yet, you can be given Lupron shots to suppress your ovaries, and out you in chemical menopause, and take an AI
@A MyBCTeam Member AI is short for Aromatase Inhibitor, the class of drugs that are hormone blockers Post menopause
Hello Melissa, Tamoxifen is given PRE Menopausal & the AI's are POST Menopausal. Another woman here yesterday consider having her ovaries removed .
If I were you I would do what @A MyBCTeam Member mentioned or have your ovaries removed. Since you already had a hysterectomy they kept your ovaries intact to prevent putting you into early menopause but now you need to be or at least suppress them. I don't think doing nothing is wise. 🎄❤️🥰
Hi Melissa,
I opted to have my tubes and ovaries removed, to reduce the chance of cancer recurrence and also to help with very heavy periods. It was the easiest surgery I've ever had. I no longer have periods. My oncologist said there was no need now for an AI, but I am getting a second opinion. Doing "nothing" does seem like a scary option.
I Had Surgery On December 26, 2023,and Didn't Start AC Until March 14, 2024. I Was Told The Wait Time Will Affect My Overall Survivability.
