What is your experience with having radiation after reconstruction and implants? Did radiation damage the implant? I’m stressing out over it…I really don’t want another surgery.

AI articles are very frightening to read. It appears to be a CYA response.

I had no problems, just don't know why they put my implant in, then did radiation.

I knew nothing about BC, just blindly did what "they" said.

Radiation therapy after mastectomy can indeed impact breast implants. Here are some key points from my knowledge base:

- Timing of Reconstruction: If you need radiation therapy after mastectomy, it is usually recommended to undergo radiation first and then have reconstruction later. This is because radiation can delay healing and cause additional scarring if given after reconstructive surgery.
- Risks: Radiation therapy can interfere with the healing process and may lead to changes in the breast's appearance and color. It can also increase the risk of complications such as infection.
- Studies: Several studies have shown that smoking and being overweight significantly contribute to the chances of infection and complications after reconstructive surgery.

It's important to discuss your concerns with your surgeon and oncologist to develop a plan that minimizes risks and aligns with your preferences.
